You spend hours on your work, practicing your technique and all our left with is less money and damaged self-esteem. If your art is not selling, I am here to tell you to not take it personally. If your art is not selling, It might not be because it is bad. Like any business, selling a product requires marketing, strategy, and Networking. This Blog will give you a beginner's guide on what areas you need to educate yourself about, to sell your art.
1. Marketing Your art
Marketing Your Art is a lot easier now that we have the internet. If you are an artist that is looking to sell their art you should be an active user on all social medial platforms. Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok, and even Pinterest. You have to build a community of art lovers, engage with them and offer art advice. Once you create a loyal fan base, you can start selling your art to them. Before you sell you have to identify how you're going to sell your product. There are three options, original paintings, art prints, or commission paintings. You must learn that all three of these options have their pros and their cons so you have to decide what painting method suits your lifestyle the best. If you work part-time and just do this as a hobby, you
might want to sell prints. If you want to do this full time, you might have enough time to do commissioned work. On the other hand, if you like exclusivity you might just want to sell original paintings.
2. Networking
Networking in the art industry can be difficult because it is such a small community. I would suggest making “art friends” on your social media platforms, sharing advice, commenting, and being active on their page. Try looking for art events in your city where you can set up a booth and sell prints of your work and meet other artists. I would even suggest buying a print from another artist that can initiate a sale for you as well. Making art friends could open new opportunities like collaborations or projects where your art style suits best.
3. Strategy
A lot of art selling is based on strategy. Like any other product you are selling you have to convince your art is worth buying. Tell the story behind your artwork. Try to appeal to your audience's emotions so that they will feel more compelled to buy. Sell your art on a reliable platform, like a website, Etsy shop, or Shopify. Include detailed descriptions of your artwork and the materials you are using and the paper you are printing your prints on. Establish clear return policies and a shipping time frame. Have open communication with your art buyers and make adjustments accordingly. You have to be strategic with your business because the art is not going to sell on its own.
I want to emphasize that art is the priority and you should enjoy every process of it. If an artist wants a chance at being a full-time artist they must learn to make time and separate the art from the business. An art business is very different from making art so it must be approached differently. While art is about the artist and their self-expression, the art business is not.
