While experimenting between art styles is essential to every artists upbringing , we must all at some point face the daunting question . " Which art style am I ? " Artists are free spirited and openminded people , so limiting yourself to one art style can be challenging. I am here to hopefully bring your mind at ease with my guide to finding your art style. Here is my 4 step guide in finding your art style.

1. The importance of choosing an art style

While beginner artist might not like the idea of confining to one style , I must first express the importance of choosing one. I can bet a good chunk of cash that in a room full of hundreds of paintings any art lover will be able to point out which painting belongs to Van Gogh. Why you may ask ? Well because he created his own unique art style that is easy to distinguish in a room full of other paintings. As an artist, that should be your goal . In a room of many , which painting is distinguishably you?

2. Experimenting

Before choosing one style , try them all ! Experiment with other mediums and different canvases , and even try two mediums at once. There really is no wrong or right way to create art as long you don't put acrylic paint over oil paint ( corny artist joke intended ). Try to really study your art process . Anything you don't enjoy from your process, remove it. Hate the tedious task of sketching? don't do it ! Go straight to YOUR fun part. Your work will be a reflection of your happiness. Study other artists. Who are your favorites ? Pull things away from their painting and add your version of it to your work.

art supplies. painting supplies. Acrylic paint. colored pencils .colored markers. colorful pens , colorful markers. art tools , art must haves. art essentials.

3. Educate yourself

After experimenting with mediums and learning what you like, educate yourself about the styles you can choose from. The most popular Styles are abstract , cubism, surrealism, contemporary, fantasy, graffiti, pop art, impressionist and modern. What part of your art process matches these styles the most. If you are a free spirit who enjoys little to no planning you might lean towards abstract. If you are a perfectionist who likes a challenge you might like cubism. If your feeling extra creative how about combining more than one style? Educating yourself is important. Learn what each style encompasses and research other artists interpretation of it . After choosing , decide what's YOUR interoperation of that style and apply it to your work !

4. A Style does not equal a box

After choosing your art style do not feel like your trapped in a box because of it. You can still create various different series of work under the same style. You can develop a new color scheme a new meaning or a different central idea while still keeping your unique artist signature.

Hopefully this article has helped you start your journey in finding your art style. Remember there is no wrong way to create art as long as your keeping your mind open to new possibilities. Wishing you a rich , vibrant and beautiful art journey. Please check out my art journey in the link below .
